The cards that were thrown out said the following things: On average, it takes 4 years and 3 doctors to get a proper Lupus diagnosis. Lupus is no longer a death sentence, however Lupus related deaths have actually increased by 61% in the last 25 years. Researchers still do not know what the cause of Lupus is, however they do believe it is a combination of genetic & environmental factors. Lupus is not contagious. Lupus can affect ANY part of the body causing inflammation, pain and sometimes permanent damage. Most commonly affected are the joints, skin, kidneys, heart and lungs. No new treatment has been approved to treat Lupus in over 40 years. Current treatments such as Prednisone and Chemotherapy can be as debilitating as the disease itself. 90% of People with Lupus are Women. African-Americans are affected 3 times more commonly than Caucasians. An estimated 1.5 Million Americans suffer from Lupus. That is one out of every 200. Lupus is more prevalent in the US than AIDS, Multiple Sclerosis, Cystic Fibrosis, Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy & Sickle Cell Anemia, COMBINED!
